If I had an NA, this is clearly the superior waving method

Bad image from the googles but perfect form of the Subaru wave

Okay so I only have crappy images from the Internet but that should describe the idea of what I’m talking about. Owning both a Miata and a STi, these cars have a prolific culture of waving to the other owners when you drive past. Especially being in Southern California now, there are plenty of both driving around all of the time. This provides me plenty of opportunities to wave at others. In general I have found that Miata waves are RARELY returned from NC (third gen) Miatas but when they are, it’s as excited as the lead image. It’s about 50/50 if other NA/NB miatas will wave back. But for the Subaru, a solid 90%+ of the Wrx/STi crowd of any generation will wave back. Even driving down the freeway, I’ll often get a quick peace sign flash from a WRX driving by me in the STi. It’s just a fun little culture thing that I always enjoy.

Of course both waves PALE in comparison to the obsessive Jeep Wrangler and motorcyclist waves. Those are much more prevalent and I don’t think I’ve ever seen two bikes drive by each other without at least one signaling to the other. That culture seems cool since it spans all bikes of all sizes. Even the Harley gangs give a peace sign to the squids. Anyways, just wanted to say how I love this “random camaraderie” that happens throughout automotive culture. Even the occasional “rivalry wave” or just “I think your car is cool” thing is great.

When I was in Madison, there would be an occasional “oh look, we both have an interesting BMW and not a leased 328xi” nod of approval.

In DC there is no such camaraderie.

When I got my driver’s license I got to use the family minivan. I would wave at every other minivan I passed. I think one person waved back.

In the NA Miata I always wave/flip up the lights.

In the Fiat I wave at other Fiats with a mild amount of success.

I always look at Miatas to give a head nod of approval. Same for Fiatas, but they don’t even look at me!

I actually see a lot because Detroit and Chrysler employee lease deals (I assume). The ND gave birth to your car, witness me!

I love it - just a couple fingers works. My wife thought it was BS, but once I got the WRX everybody was doing it. The weekend after I got the car (still had temp plates) we were headed up to a GRC event and got waved at, followed, etc by a dozen other subie folks - my wife doesn’t think I was lying any more. :)

I get/do a similar thing as the Suby wave for Minis. Its a peace out or a nod, but only from Cooper S hardtops (not the clubman, paceman, etc)

The WRX wave is real, but not as friendly as the country wave. What’s that? It’s the wave that EVERYONE in the country gives no matter who’s going the other way or what they’re driving. It’s one of the best parts of going back home.

Oh yeah for sure. I’ve witnessed this. Im like who the hell are these people waving at me in a pickup truck? Then I realize people just do that to everyone. I’m not off the grid like that all too often though so it surprises me every time.

Well yeah its funny, the Miata thing is more of a wave and the subaru thing is definitely a peace sign. I end up just peace signing at miatas anyways too. A lot harder to see subaru drivers though since the majority have limo tints here in LA lol. Surprised I don’t see a vape cloud half the time...

I thought the Subaru wave was done standing on front of your Subaru parked on the side of the road with the hood open, holding your newly-burnt hand and spinning in place in pain as you’ve just discovered a head gasket failure.

I always go headlight flip on the Miata. This alone is worth the price of admission on the NA. I had a Focus ST catch up the other day while on the road just so they could give me a thumbs up. I gave them a headlight flip and they just about lost their minds.

The Fiat wave is different. It’s usually some decently attractive young lass sort of doing a wave/dance/freak out thing at seeing another Fiat 500, though. I do the three finger wave from my steering wheel.

The GTI wave gets returned about 33% of the time. And I often enough am in commute mode that I only return it about 50% of the time if they see me first. But one guy and I pass each other most mornings and we regularly wave.

Its worth having lights that work instead lol. Although having seen some of the LED mods that make the NA lights functional surely make me jealous. I would totally flip the lights at literally everyone. I would break my headlights within a year no doubt.

I got a Disco wave once in California. It was epic.

Pretty sure the c900 wave is you both frantically pull over, exchange phone numbers, and bargain for parts.
